DANSS
Same-sex Ballroom and Latin Dancing
Who we are
DANSS promotes same-sex ballroom and Latin dancing by providing same-sex dance instruction and dancing opportunities and by supporting same-sex dance competitions. For almost 20 years, DANSS has held social same-sex dance classes in ballroom, New Vogue and Latin dance styles at Thistle Hall in Wellington’s CBD on Sundays from 7–9 pm. Hundreds of people have discovered the magic and fun of same-sex dancing over these years.
DANSS was first established in 1998, after a group of Wellington dancers attended the Gay Games in Amsterdam. Since then, Heta Timu and Ted Fecteau, along with dedicated volunteers, have shared their skills and enthusiasm to promote same-sex dancing. A fundamental principle of DANSS is that entry is by koha so as to make it accessible to everyone. From 2008, an incorporated society, DANSS 2008 Inc, has run an annual same-sex dance competition in Wellington.
